Our house in a beautiful Moroccan oasis

tighmert

The oasis of Tighmert is an eight km long and almost three km wide oasis, situated ten km east of Guelmim,  “the gate of Sahara”. This town is about a three hours drive south of Agadir and is well known for its Saturday camel market. There are approximately 650 families still living and working here. It is a very calm and relaxing place and very beautiful. There is a source, providing the farmers with irrigation water and the cascades make it a  wonderful place to cool off in the summer. The first time we ever saw the oasis  was 2006 - we were on our way further inland and just stopped by to have a quick look. We had no idea that we later would build a house in this wonderful place. Four years later, our house is nearly finished, we have a limited access of electricity from our solar panels, we have communal water and have started to grow vegetables. We are looking at our piece of land - wondering what to do with the rest......the work continues, read our blog!

We have tried as much as possible to design the house in a traditional southern Moroccan style, but we have had to compromise sometimes - we do want a comfortable lifestyle. There are two bedrooms, two  bathrooms, a spacious living room, a large kitchen and a courtyard with several seating areas for both sun and shade. There is communal water and we have also built a “cuvée” under the house where we can store water coming in from the canals. This water we use for irrigation and it will eventually be connected into the house. We have solar panels to provide us with electricity and for more energy-consuming machines we use a generator. The garden outside is big enough for vegetable patches and of course......for new projects!

The oasis of Tighmert is interesting in itself - walking around exploring this world of palm groves is delightfully refreshing, but there is also a lot to do and see not far from here. There is a museum filled with interesting things from the world of nomads and  the Saturday camel market in Guelmim is a must. The sand dunes about 30 km from the oasis and Plage Blanche, an incredibly beautiful unexplored beach, are both fantastic places to go for overnight stays under the stars. The most rewarding part of the everyday life here is, in our eyes,  the privilege to experience this traditional saharouie culture, meeting the people living here and be part of something that is so totally different from the part of the world we come from.
